The queen's gift was started by Queen Victoria who gave food, clothing and coal to the poor of Windsor. Latterly this became just a 1cwt (one hundredweight) sack of coal. This photograph is of Granny Sowden, holding a piece of the queen's Christmas gift of coal, which she received from Queen Mary. She is sitting in front of her fire grate in Charles Street, Windsor, some time in the 1920s.

A letter from a German Prisoner of War camp, from T.R.Kirkpatrick to Miss Doris Mellor, dated 3rd July 1917. The letter has been heavily censored, with one whole page missing. We do not know who Kirkpatrick was or what happened to him. A framed watercolour painting of 'The Battle of Aylesford Tapestry' (1878). E.M. Ward painted this picture for the tapissiers at the Old Windsor Tapestry Manufactory. The Battle of Aylesford was a battle between the Britons and the Anglo-Saxons and was set down in writing in the 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle' and the 'Historia Brittonum'. Neither source confirms the victor, however.

This watercolour depicts Windsor Castle from a south-easterly direction, with numerous labourers in the foreground haymaking on the castle slopes. Henry Ward was a close friend of local architect and artist A.Y. Nutt. More than that, however, he was accredited with fostering Nutt’s talent for both drawing and painting.
