Two hundredth Birthday celebrations

2019 marks 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. They had a close relationship with Windsor, regularly spending time here and involving themselves in local events and social problems. Victoria and Albert were cousins and became engaged in Windsor in October 1839, honeymooning here after their marriage. Of their nine children, Alfred was born at Windsor Castle and five of them were married in St George’s Chapel.

Social Unrest

The 19^th century was a time of extreme poverty, injustice and social unrest. Queen Victoria was seen by some as responsible for sustaining inequality. There were eight assassination attempts on Victoria’s life during her reign, including one at Central Station in Windsor in 1882, by Roderick Maclean. In a note written prior to the attempt, Maclean called Victoria ‘the leader of the bloated aristocrats’. At his trial he was found ‘not guilty but insane’. Victoria was unhappy with this and insisted the law be changed. This result was an Act of Parliament the following year changing the form of such verdicts to ‘guilty but insane’. Design and Industry

The Victorian period is known for its developments in industry, social reform and the arts. Albert was the mastermind behind the Great Exhibition of 1851, showcasing design and manufacturing marvels from across the world. The Great Exhibition inspired the Festival of Britain in 1951 and is part of the reason the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum exists today. The Natural History Museum, Science Museum and Royal Albert Hall were all created with funds raised from the Great Exhibition and enabled Albert and Victoria’s vision to educate and inspire a nation on cultural and scientific achievements. These institutions are still researching and exhibiting the wonders of the world today.

Royal Residence

Windsor was an important family home for Victoria and Albert and the backdrop to their private family celebrations and sorrow.
