A present from Windsor' is painted on the base of the stem in gold lettering and there is decoration on the stem of pink flowers and foliage. 'Made in Germany' is stamped on the underside. Dated about 1900. Windsor has been visited by travellers and tourists for hundreds of years. In medieval times, St Georges Chapel was a place of pilgrimage and visiting pilgrims could buy souvenirs of their travels in local shops. pilgrim badges, depicting a saint or a symbol of a saint was a popular souvenir. St Georges Chapel is also the home of the Knights of the Order of the Garter, started by Edward III and the almost annual celebration of the Order of the Garter, talked about at the end of Shakespeare's play, 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' and now known as Garter Day (held in June) have also brought visitors to Windsor. Many people also visited as part of the Royal court or just to see the Castle or catch a glimpse of a member of the royal family. Windsor Castle officially opened to the public in the 1840s. Royal weddings, births, deaths and other events such as the fire of 1992 and the 2012 Olympics have brought tourists to the town. Buying an item as a memory of a visit or holiday to a place or an event has been a popular social practice for hundreds of years. For example, postcards, pencils, rubbers and trinkets that can be bought for a small amount. This Candlestick was found in a local charity shop in 2016 and given to the museum.
