Modern guidebooks began to emerge in earnest during the early nineteenth century, with a burgeoning market in both travel and tourism. The first Windsor guidebooks also began to appear at about this time, and much sooner in the case of Charles Knight’s ‘A Windsor Guide’ (1792). Affordable and conveniently pocket-sized, the book contains a descriptive tour of the castle, including the buildings in the Lower Ward and the Winchester and Salisbury Towers. Charles Knight (senior) had a book shop on Castle Hill, Windsor. He and with his son, Charles Knight (junior) founded the town's first newspaper, the Windsor and Eton Express in 1812.Measurements: 195 x 120 x 20
