Grant of arms to Peter Van Sittart, framed, probably parchment, issued by the Duke of Norfolk under the authority of the sovereign William III, dated 3 November 1697. William Van Sittart of Juliers, was born 1517 and died 1573 having a son John b. 1552 who fled to Danzig to avoid persecution in 1598. His eldest son was William b1662 and his second son was Peter who came to England in 1670. His eldest son was Robert and his second son was Arthur Van Sitttart of Clewer and of Moat Park Windsor and of Shottesbrooke, his second son was Robert, and third son was Henry whose second son was Nicholas, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1812-1823 and created Baron Bexley on 1 March 1823. The Windsor connection is through the eldest son of Arthur Van Sittart, Arthur Vansittart, of Shottesbrook, and of Clewer, Col in the Army, Vice Lt. for Berks MP for Berkshire 1757-74. His third son was William, rector of Shottesbrooke and White Waltham. The eldest son of Colonel Arthur Vansittart, Arthur (b 28 Dec 1775) was also MP for Windsor. His third son William (b.2 May 1813) was MP for Windsor. The Grant was donated to the museum collection by a local solicitors who found it in there offices in the 1970s, unfortunately the wax seal that would have at one time been attached, was already missing. One of the solicitors had it framed and hung it on his office wall for many years. The Firm were solicitors to the Van Sittart family for many generations, until the last family member passed away in the mid-20th century.Measurements: 380 x 560 x 445
