Acts and Monuments' was, for its time, an incomparable achievement in both English printing and protestant martyrology. Indeed, Actes and Monuments documents the history of the Protestant faith and includes polemical accounts of the suffering of numerous Protestants under the Catholic Church. The illustration depicts the burning of the three Windsor Martyrs who were condemned to death for heresy in 1543. The text at the top of the illustration reads: The condemning of Anthony Pearson, Marbeck, Testwood, and Filmer, with the burning of the said Pearson, Testwood, and Filmer, under the Castle of Windsor, here lively described […] Marbeck saved by the King’s pardon. An account of the burning of the Windsor Martyrs was provided by Foxe in his treatise. He sadly lamented that ‘many who saw their patient suffering confessed that they could have found it in their hearts to have died with them.’ We do not know from which edition this page came from.
