Bust of William Shakespeare carved from a portion of Herne’s Oak by W. Perry, 1864

Museum ID: WNDRB : 12.51

W. Perry, woodcarver to Queen Victoria, purportedly carved this bust of the Bard, William Shakespeare, from a portion of Herne’s Oak: a tree that has been immortalised by Shakespeare’s comedy, ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’. As well as Perry’s commemorative bust, a special casket was also made to hold Shakespeare’s famous ‘First Folio’ inside. The bust was donated to the Guildhall Exhibition (now the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum) by King George VI in 1951.
