Our family-friendly museum is accessible to all

  • Access for all visitors to Windsor & Royal Borough Museum is via the main double doors on the Corn Market (area surrounded by the Guildhall pillars) and through an automatic glass door on the left.

 

  • The Corn Market is accessible for wheelchair users via the left-side of Windsor Guildhall, next to Queen Charlotte Street and the ‘Crooked House’ and fountain. There is a narrow area of flattened cobbles on this side that users need to cross to get to the Corn Market.

 

  • There are 4 low steps up to the Corn Market on the right-side of Windsor Guildhall, next to the Prince Harry Pub.

 

In the museum

  • Our museum comprises a ground floor exhibition room which is accessible for wheelchair users.

 

  • Fold up chairs are available, please ask the volunteers if you wish to use these.

 

  • Large print captions for the displays and transcripts for the audio hotspots are available on request.

 

  • An audio overview of objects on display is available via the audio wands or via QR codes in 7 different languages. Please ask the volunteers if you wish to listen to these.

 

  • There is an induction loop on the front desk.

 

  • Audio wands can be activated at various points around the museum to help visitors interpret the items in the collection.

 

  • An induction loop for the audio wands is available on request.

 

  • QR Codes are included in some displays to provide extra information.

 

In the Guildhall

  • Guided tours of the upstairs rooms of Windsor Guildhall (when available) include climbing approximately 20 steps with a handrail on one side). Museum volunteers are on hand to give assistance.

 

  • There is one stairlift which can be used by visitors who are able to move from their wheelchair into the stairlift unaided. Please ask the museum staff if you would like to use this.

 

Toilets

  • Public toilets are available underneath the Guildhall, each side of the Corn Market via 20 steps down approximately.

 

  • Accessible toilets and baby changing facilities in Windsor can be found here.

 

  • The nearest Changing Places toilets are here.

 

Additional access information

  • All dogs including Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs and Assistance Dogs are welcome in the Museum.

 

  • There are objects to handle or touch in a few of our secure drawers. Please ask a member of staff if you would like to explore these.

 

  • The museum is quieter at 10am or lunchtime (outside school holidays).

 

  • We are a cashless venue.
